Episodio #1: Piloto

El primer episodio de nuestro Podcast se publicó en la mañana del 4 de Octubre del 2020. Decidimos titularlo “Piloto” ya que es el primer capítulo de lo que esperamos sea una larga aventura.

¿De qué hablamos en el primer episodio? Pues compartimos algunos fun facts sobre varios pilotos populares de la televisión. Además, hablamos sobre los primeros episodios de series recientes que hemos estado disfrutando, series como Lovecraft Country (HBO), Utopia (Amazon Prime Video), Normal People (Hulu) y Ratched (Netflix).

¿Hablamos de libros? Por supuesto, la serie Lovecraft Country (adaptada de un libro de Matt Ruff) me recordó una novela que leí hace un tiempo: “14” de Peter Clines, y fue mi recomendación para el mes de Octubre.

Vera, por su parte, recomendó una novela gráfica titulada Monstress, un proyecto que sale de la imaginación de Marjorie Liu y Sana Takeda.

Book Review: The Girls by Emma Cline.

The Girls was published in June of 2016 by Random House as Emma Cline‘s debut novel, it has had an acceptable welcoming, currently 3.6 stars on Goodreads. I went through this book in about a week or two as I decided to make it my companion on Audible during my bi-daily commutes.

The truth is I was instantly caught by the narrative, even if it got a little confusing as we jumped through the different time lapses of our main character on the audio version, the story manages to take us along for an interesting ride, at least during the first chapters.

Evie Boyd is not a complicated person, it could be said she is rather the opposite of complicated, she is a big blank. I personally believe that this feature (her blankness) is probably what makes her so IMPRESSIONABLE -yes, with capital letters-. I don’t know if I was supposed to relate to her at some level but it was really difficult.

I was not alive during the 60’s and I haven’t talked much with people who were about those days… I am not sure if I am trying to use this as an excuse for my uneasiness with everyone in this book but maybe it is a good reason, not having the right mindset and context to place myself in those years has made me unable to relate with their mentality.

I have felt lonely, but I believe through this book we get to meet the highest degree of loneliness, of the needing to belong and the longing for approval. The sad thing is it all appears to grow exponentially with Evie’s age instead of the other way around.

I understand that personality and character are developed mostly in our teenage years, and that feeling left out could be dangerous and unpleasant. I understand young Evie, I tried to be most patient with her and her many discomforting actions; older Evie though, a grown woman and her need for acknowledgment, acceptance, appraisal… it was truly annoying. 

I wish I could say more, I had discontinued this review and decided to rescue it halfway through the black hole of my drafts. This will teach me to finish my ideas right after the book is fresh and sound. Anyway, did you read this book? What are your thoughts?

Six Months, Three Days: Cuento corto.

Six Months, Three Days es una novela corta de género romántico – ciencia ficción escrita por Charlie Jane Anders, publicada en la página Tor.com en Junio 2011 y galardonada con el premio Hugo en 2012 por mejor Novela corta.

Ésta historia combina atractivas temáticas como viajes en el tiempo, clarividencia, realidades alternas, entre otras. Podría decirse que es una mezcla entre las premisas de Mr. Nobody y The Time Traveler’s Wife.

Sin ganas de arruinar la experiencia de futuros lectores, les invito a leer la historia de Judy y Doug, y a sumergirse en su interesante desarrollo. El cuento está en idioma inglés, disponible en el primer enlace de éste escrito. Go ahead and enjoy it!

Reseña de Película: What If.

What If es una película Irlandesa-Canadiense del 2013 que tuvo estreno en Estados Unidos en Agosto del 2014. Se trata de una comedia-drama de corte romántico cuyo título original -y con el que fue estrenada en Canadá- es “The F Word”, imaginándonos ya la razón por la que decidieron alterar el título. Contó con Michael Dowse como director, y Elan Mastai, T.J Dawe y Michael Rinaldi como escritores.

El filme nos regala la historia de Wallace y Chantry, dos jóvenes que se conocen por casualidad en una fiesta a la que ninguno planeaba asistir. Wallace se encuentra en una etapa de su vida donde reina la incertidumbre y en la que se propone re-estructurarse a sí mismo; Chantry, por otro lado, parece tener su vida bajo control, contando con un trabajo estable, una pareja estable y una serie de planes que parecen desarrollarse como esperados. Aún encontrándose en diferentes situaciones, ambos logran entablar una espontánea y agradable amistad, la cual nos mantendrá ocupados y entretenidos por un buen rato en pantalla.

El elenco cuenta con Daniel Radcliffe, a quien conocemos principalmente por las entregas de Harry Potter; Zoe Kazan, quien ha participado de películas recientes, como Ruby Sparks e In Your Eyes; Adam Driver, hoy conocido en los medios más que nada gracias a la serie de HBO llamada Girls; entre otros como Megan Park, Mackenzie Davis, Rafe Spall, entre otros. Radcliffe nos muestra otra cara de su repertorio como actor, como ya viene haciendo en otras películas, queriendo alejarse de su papel de tantos años como Harry. No me convenció mucho, pero no es el peor de los actores, su trabajo es bastante aceptable.

Con una duración de 98 minutos, admito que desde el inicio se pintó un poquito cliché, sin embargo resulta ser buena para pasar el rato. Algunos la han comparado con 500 Days Of Summer, la realidad es que ambas películas muestran ciertas verdades sobre las relaciones amorosas, pero sinceramente no se comparan.
